Day 14 from Gene’s journal

If there was such a thing as a perfect day, it would have been today.  The start of my perfect day I did not sleep a wink.  Solution, I drank coffee as a sleep substitute.  I called a reporter from the star tribune and she said that the story has already run today.  7 A.M. I walked out to get the paper and took a look in the back, then in the middle with no success.  So I folded the paper back up and BOOM. The story was one the FRONT PAGE.  then my friend Abbigail sacrificed her day to help us off.  My aunt and uncle gave me the best farewell I had ever received.  Any better a farewell and I would have stayed.  I was privileged to talk to a man who was truly inspiring and supportive of our mission.  One lady recognized us from the paper and many others listened to this adventure in amazement.  Cedric, my new Kayaking companion, proved on the first day to be as good as gold.  We shared some great talks, experienced our first Lock together where we dropped over 40 feet to the correct river level.  The Edwards made sure we were well fed with burgers, beans, Ice cream, smoothies, chips, and fresh produce, and boy was I the happiest person in the world.    We made just under 30 miles but our camp site was decked with solar powered lights, a throne, and a tree that was literally on fire until we stopped the whole forest from burning down.
